Mrs Johnston is our Art and Design subject leader. She is passionate about art and enjoys sharing that passion and enthusiasm with our children. She has studied Art for over ten years and hopes to inspire children to become independent, unique artists. Every child should be offered the opportunity to love and enjoy art around them as Art and Design plays such a huge part in the world around us, it can be seen everywhere!

Mrs Johnston encourages children to visit galleries and museums as well as organising trips in school. She hopes this will develop a deepened appreciation for the work of other artists and inspire our children to explore their own curiosities in Art to build on their individual expression.

At St Thomas’ C E Primary, we emphasise the value of Art and Design through a language rich environment. Art and Design is a way for children to extend their skills and express themselves in a creative, imaginative manner through continuous exploration.

We believe children should be able to explore their own thoughts and ideas confidently to develop their resilience and critical thinking skills whilst using a wide range of media and exposure to subject specific vocabulary.

Our curriculum will engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design whilst following the requirements of the National Curriculum. It gives them the opportunity to create artwork with a real purpose through line, tone, texture, colour, pattern, shape, 3D form. As the children progress through these techniques, they should be able to think critically and develop a more accurate understanding of Art and Design. They will also be able to reflect on how Art and Design shapes our history and contributes to the culture, creativity and wealth of society.
