End of Year Group Expecations

Swimming and Water Safety

All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.

In particular, pupils should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

At St. Thomas’ our children go swimming in Year 3 for two terms (Spring and Summer) then in Year 4 for one term (Autumn) at Daisyfield Swimming Baths.

Extra swimming sessions also take place in Year 5 and Year 6.

Sports Star

Each week a child is nominated by a member of staff for something they have done either in a PE lesson, after school activity or competition. This is then celebrated in Friday’s Golden Assembly.
