At St.Thomas’, we have been fortunate enough to have been able to transform a patch of onsite woodland area into a beautiful outdoor learning space, complete with pathways, an outdoor classroom and a firepit.
St.Thomas’ woodland area can be entered by both the pathway into school and from the school field and is named ‘Willows Woods’ as it is decorated with bespoke hand carved wooden statues of characters from ‘The Wind in the Willows’ aligning the path leading to the outdoor classroom circle.
We run both Summer and Winter Forest School sessions with the children as after school clubs. These are run by Miss Butterworth, often working in collaboration with members of New Ground. During these sessions, the children learn about the nature around them and how to recognise and care for it.
Our Forest School is always very popular amongst Year 5 and 6 pupils with activities such as shelter construction, erecting hammocks, wood whittling, boundary walks and fire construction.
Forest School is strongly linked with St.Thomas’ ECO council as the children involved in the council care for and maintain the forest area, however, limited places for both Summer and Winter Forest School sessions are available on a first come first served to all children across Years 5 and 6.
